WHAT IS A
SOURCE BOOK?
The first volume was named "The Giant Schnauzer Record 1977 –
1979". This title accurately describes what the Source Book
series does; it records all Giant Schnauzers earning AKC titles
during a set time span. Each profile has the featured dog's
vital statistics of registration number, health clearances, sex,
color, titles earned, breeder, owner and a three generation
pedigree. About 60% of the profiles include a picture of the
dog.
There are presently eight volumes in the series, from 1977
through 2003. Every year about 125 AKC titles are earned and all
eligible Giants are included. Club membership is not a
determining criterion; for this is a historical report or record
of the breed's activities. There are other breed books of this
type book, but many list only those who pay for inclusion. Such
books do not then have a full report of the breed's activities
in the US.
Breeders, of course, like to use the series in planning future
breedings. Buyers like it because they can independently check a
line for health clearances, or how active a line is in the
conformation and performance rings. Those of a historical bend
find in it a way to follow the breed's development over the
years. Some just like to look over the activities for the year.
