Giant Schnauzer Performance History, AKC
The American
Kennel Club (AKC) was established in 1884. Giants Schnauzers
were first imported into the US in the 1920s. The Giant
Schnauzer Club of America (GSCA) was incorporated under the laws
of Michigan as a non-profit corporation in 1962.
The AKC
established the sport of Obedience in 1936. Novice, Open and
Utility titles were offered with some differences, most in
Utility class (there was a group stand for examination, a track,
a send back for a dropped glove, and the scent discrimination
exercise included a wooden article). The Obedience Trial
Championship was introduced in July 1977. In 2000 the Utility
Dog Excellent title was offered.
Tracking was a
Utility class exercise until 1947, when a separate Tracking Dog
title was offered. The Tracking Dog Excellent title was
established in 1980. In 1995 the Versatile Surface Tracker and
Champion Tracker titles were added.
Agility was
started in 1994 with the jumper classes added in 1998. In 1999
the Master Agility Championship was added. In 2002 these
classes, minus the MACH, were doubled by adding the preferred
division, which has lower jump heights and five more seconds.
In 2001, AKC
offered Versatile Companion Dog titles (5 levels) which are
recognition for dogs that are accomplished in all of the
companion events.
In 2004 Giants
were added to the AKC approved breeds to do herding tests,
although herding has been established since 1991.
In 2005, Rally
was added as a titling event open to all breeds.
In 2006, PAX
title was added to the agility program, which requires 20 double
“Qs” from the preferred Excellent B classes.
In 2007,
Giants are fully eligible to compete at all herding levels and
the Fast classes are added to the AKC agility program.
In 2009, Optional titling classes
(Graduate Novice, Graduate Open and Versatility) and Master
Program (Obedience Master# 1-9) and Grand Obedience Master (when
at the 10th level of OM) are added to AKC obedience.
